Practical Course "Analysis of High-Throughput Datasets for Biologists"

Organization:

Bavarian Center for Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry (BayBioMS)

Chair of Proteomics and Bioanalytics

Dates: Two rounds per year in spring (February or March) and autumn (September or October)

Location: Campus Weihenstephan, Freising

Language: English

Status: The course is free of charge.

Lectures will give insight into how biological knowledge can be generated from modern omic technologies (transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic) and illustrate different ways of analyzing such data. Practicals will consist of 1) how to use many freely available computing tools to work more powerfully and effectively 2) computer exercises that will enable the participants to apply statistical methods to the analysis of large scale biological data 3) gain knowledge on how to utilize existing biological databases in their research.

Objective:

Scientists find themselves facing exponentially larger data sets and analyses without suitable tools to deal with them. Many biologists end up using spreadsheet programs for most of their data-processing tasks and spend hours clicking around or copying and pasting, and then repeating the process for other data files. The aim of this course is to familiarize students with advanced data analysis methodologies and provide hands-on training on the latest available tools for the analysis of high throughput data sets. It will provide biologists with basic knowledge on what information can be found and where, as well as how can the information be accessed/retrieved. A variety of examples of use, which a user might require for a research, will be presented.

The course should be registered via TUM online. LMU students can write email to chen.meng[at]tum.de.
